Life lessons

Our homeschool is in a state of transition right now.  After many years of learning together in a setting we’ve called ‘Family School’, we now have 3 teenagers 17 years of age and up, two moving from home school high school to online college courses, one seeking practical life skills lessons to help him learn independent living skills, one parent working in spurts to complete an undergraduate degree online, and another parent working hard to keep up with a long list of ‘honey-do’ items and other personal projects.  We each have our own personal pursuits and challenges as well, some of them particularly acute this year.  It is a customized curriculum for lifelong learning.

Oh – and we’re still in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, with increasing polarization and tension all around.  On occasion, I find myself wondering, “Did we sign up for this?”

When I let that question settle on my heart, I feel a resounding answer – “Yes, you did sign up for this.”

When I am measured by my response to the challenges of life, and most often seem to come up short, I am comforted that the One who created all things that are, also knows me – He knows my name and both my weaknesses and strengths. He wants me, and each of us, to discover who we were meant to become.

When we try to shortcut those life lessons or take the easier path, we skip the growth that can be ours, the adrenaline of accomplishment, and the peace that comes from knowing that we are on the track set out for us on our journey home.
