For over five centuries, the Medal of St. Benedict has served Christians as a reminder to live a rigorous, holy life apart from the world like the 5th-century saint, Benedict of Nursia, the father of Western monasticism and author of the Rule of Benedict. St. Benedict’s devotion to life as a monk, imitating the vigilant, prayerful, and contemplative life of Christ, continues to inspire millions of Christians today and ward off temptation through the medal. The medal depicts him holding up a Crucifix and his famous rule in his hands on one side and the Cross on the other, both sides covered in Latin inscriptions with the most prominent word “pax”, meaning peace.
This Crucifix with the Medal of St. Benedict in the center of the cross on both the front and back, the crucified Lord front and center, exemplifies the very kind of life St. Benedict and all the saints sought to live, offering themselves, in Jesus, as a sacrifice to God. “We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” (1 Corinthians 1:23-25).
