Description

Depicting the image of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus is a tradition possibly dating back to the time when Christians hid in the catacombs in the first three centuries of the Church. Beginning with cave frescos almost as simple as this carving, Christians depicted a woman holding a child in her lap. The early Christians always held the Virgin Mary in high esteem, many times calling her the New Eve, ushering the “new, life-giving Adam”, Christ, into the world, and the Mother of God who made Himself small. This particular depiction is often called the Madonna (Italian for My Lady) or the Theotokos (Greek for God-Bearer).

This piece is a reminder of the humility of Jesus, who willed to make Himself a child so that we might know Him as one of mankind, born of the Virgin Mother. Offered with permission and in partnership with Jimmy’s Bazaar in Jerusalem, Israel.
