Description
A statue of the Holy Family escaping Bethlehem to find refuge in Egypt: Mary and the Child Jesus on the donkey, with Joseph walking alongside. Of all places to go, the Holy Family decided to retreat to Egypt to avoid Jesus being killed by the purge of King Herod. The very country where the Israelites sought refuge from famine and became enslaved to a tyrant was the dwelling place of Christ for His early years, away from the Holy Land. Mysteriously, this reveals how God chooses to bring even His divine Son to foreign deserts to wait for when tyrants pass away and peace returns. Likewise, God chooses to bring us to foreign places so that our souls may be purified from the tyranny of sin as we await the true Promised Land of Heaven.
This carving is an excellent and beautiful reminder throughout the year that, despite the oppressive trials one might encounter in life, we, like Christ, are on a pilgrimage in a foreign land waiting for the preparation of our true home in Heaven.
